50 Years of History
American Live Stock Insurance Company was formed in 1952 under the direction
of Frank Harding and Clinton K. Tomson.
Frank was an experienced ranch manager, cattle buyer, and importer-exporter of
cattle. Through the Harding and Harding Agency, Frank and his father, F.W.
Harding, were partners in both the import-export business and insurance of
livestock through Lloyds of London, with whom they held the first general
livestock contract.
Clinton was raised and worked on his family’s ranch. He exhibited show herds
that included grand champion steers, and was Director and Executive Secretary of
the American Shorthorn Breeders Association. Clint judged many international
livestock shows.
Frank and Clint met each other for the first time at the ages of 10 and 12 while
competing in cattle shows.
The story goes that after borrowing $280,000 from a local bank, with no
collateral, American Live Stock Insurance Company was formed. Frank and Clint
combed the countryside looking for agents to represent the Company. Today the
Company enjoys surplus of more than $45,000,000.
Insurance for registered cattle was the primary focus in the early days. During
the late 1970’s, as values increased and interest in owning registered horses
grew, American Live Stock increased its presence in the horse industry as well.
Over the years, the company has insured several Kentucky Derby winners, many
prized bulls and valuable zoo animals.
